We use different spices every day in order to flavor up our meals, and many of them also offer a variety of health benefits.

For example, oregano is a powerful antibacterial agent, while turmeric can soothe inflammation and reduce the symptoms of asthma.

However, adding only a pinch of a herb or spice to your meals won’t help you benefit from it. In some cases, only taking supplements can significantly boost your overall health.

Herbal teas are a great alternative to supplements, but in general, pills and supplements work best if you really want to improve your health.

Here are 6 herbal supplements which can fight inflammation and improve your overall health:

Ginger

According to studies, ginger can relieve morning sickness and neutralize the side-effects of chemotherapy. Studies have also found that ginger extract works far better than Dramamine in cases of motion sickness.

To treat this unpleasant problem, add ¼-1 teaspoon of ginger extract in a pot of water and drink the tea with some honey.

You can also take 500 mg. of the extract in the form of pills before travelling or 4 hours before the trip’s end. However, you need to be wary of ginger in cases of pregnancy. Use no more than 2 gr. per day to treat problems such as morning sickness, but never anything more than that.

Sage

Sage has been used to boost brain health for centuries and is also a great antiseptic agent which works well against sore throat.

Sage can also assist in the treatment of Alzheimer’s diseases as it blocks the same enzymes targeted by memory loss drugs.

If you’re using the herb against Alzheimer’s and memory loss, take 30 drops of sage extract a few times a day. For sore throat, gargle a bit of sage tea 2-3 times during the day. Although sage is pretty much safe for use, high amounts of it have been known to cause seizures.

Garlic

Garlic has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties and according to studies it can also fight inflammation in the cardiovascular system.

Garlic extract has been found to prevent atherosclerosis by lowering the levels of LDL cholesterol bit by bit. In order to promote better arterial health, you need 200-300 mg. of garlic supplements per day.

However, don’t take it if you’re on aspirin or warfarin as garlic extract has been known to thin the blood and cause blood loss.

Oregano

As we already said, oregano is a powerful antibacterial agent which can fight off infections and reduce inflammation in the body.

Some experts say that oregano oil can also treat giardiasis and diarrhea, although its mainly used against upper respiratory tract problems.

It can be used against the flu and colds, but if used in excess it can burn your mouth. The best way to use oregano is to get oregano oil and consume 20-30 drops diluted in 4 oz. of water 4 times a day.

Turmeric

Turmeric is another great anti-inflammatory agent that can relieve pain caused by arthritis, osteoarthritis and other inflammatory conditions.

According to experts, you only need a pinch of turmeric powder per meal in order to reduce inflammation. If you use it in the form of supplement, take 4 gr. of turmeric per day.

Peppermint

Peppermint is one of the best stomach-soothing herbs you can use. It can treat a variety of digestive problems, and peppermint coated capsules are ideal for treating the symptoms of IBS.

These capsules go directly in the intestines where they provide a soothing, antispasmodic effect, which relieves symptoms such as constipation or diarrhea.

Drink a few cups of peppermint tea a day in cases of IBS, or take 1-3 peppermint coated capsules for the same purpose.
