Researchers: Manuka Honey May Kill Far More Bacteria Than Some Available Antibiotics
Australian researchers have recently found that one particular honey type is able to destroy even the most dangerous bacteria to man.
The European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and Frontiers in Microbiology published these findings which showed that Manuka honey, which is produced in New Zealand, can effectively destroy bacteria even when many of the world’s top antibiotics are failing, especially in the fight against resistant “superbugs.”
This type of honey has become popular in the last few years, after its producers sought trademark protection, as a result of the numerous fake products reported.
It is produced by bees foraging on the nectar of the New Zealand Manuka bush, and tea trees native only to Australia and New Zealand. It was found to kill every single pathogen and bacteria it was tested on, and its topical application treated skin infections, bites, and cuts.
None of the superbugs it was used against could build up immunity, which is the main issue in the case of antibiotics. According to Dr. Dee Carter of the University of Sydney’s School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences:
“New antibiotics tend to have short shelf lives, as the bacteria, they attack quickly become resistant. Many large pharmaceutical companies have abandoned antibiotic production because of the difficulty of recovering costs. Developing effective alternatives could, therefore, save many lives.”
Dr. Carter explained that a compound in this honey, called methylglyoxal, combines with other unknown compounds, and leads to “multi-system failure” that kills the bacteria.
These findings are of utmost importance, even though there is a need for further research.
Yet, what is already confirmed is that Manuka honey is a promising cure in the fight against various ailments and diseases, and offers the following benefits:
- It is full of nutrients, like fructose, amino acids, enzymes and B-complex vitamins, particularly thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), and B6, minerals, like iron, manganese, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, sodium, potassium
- Strengthens the immune system
- Soothes eczema and hives
- Cures tonsillitis
- Relieves gastritis
- Resolves rosacea
- Prevents and treats colon damage
- Treats chronic sinusitis

You can purchase Manuka honey online and in health food stores, but make sure you always choose the one which has been UMF(Unique Manuka Factor) certified.
This term stands for the phytochemical property derived from the Manuka bushes and is regulated by the New Zealand’s Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association.
